Online counselling has been proven to be very effective, but it is different to face to face in several ways. This information sheet is to help you get the most out of your sessions.
Preparing for Your Online Counselling Session
- You can join your session using a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop- just ensure your device is fully charged, has the latest updates installed, and is connected to secure Wi-Fi (avoid public networks). It’s also helpful to have a backup method of contact, such as a mobile phone, in case of technical issues.
- Choose a private, quiet space with a strong signal where you’re unlikely to be disturbed. You may want to bring a drink, notepad, pen, and tissues with you.
- Before your appointment, you’ll receive a link with instructions to join the meeting. You may be prompted to download an app- just follow the on-screen guidance. If you’re running late, please let us know.
- Most devices have a built-in mic and camera that work well. For added privacy, using earphones is recommended. Placing your device on a stable surface can also help with visibility and comfort.
- Once in the session, controls to mute your mic or turn off your camera are usually at the bottom of the screen. If there are any sound or video issues, check these settings first.
- If connection is lost, your counsellor will call you on the number you’ve provided.
- During your first session, the counsellor will explain how you’ll work together and how your safety and privacy will be supported. Sessions last 50 minutes, and you’ll be given a 5–10 minute warning before the end to wrap up and arrange your next appointment if needed.
- Payment details will be sent in advance, and we kindly ask that fees are paid prior to the session.
