Frequently asked questions

How do I make an appointment?

If you would like to begin using our Counselling Services, first make your way to our Client Portal.

From here you can register to use our services. There are a series of pre-appointment forms that you will need to complete before booking an intake session which will be conducted by an intake worker. This is simply gathering information and is not a counselling session. If you would like to attend counselling as a couple, please both register separately through our client portal.

Following your intake session, you will be allocated a counsellor based around the answers you gave in your intake session, so please answer our questions briefly but as honestly as you can.

Will I see the same Counsellor Every Time?

Yes, you will see the same counsellor each time you attend. Initially we will offer you a series of either 6 or 12 sessions depending on your circumstances. However, your sessions are not restricted to 6 or 12, regular reviews are held so that you and your counsellor can discuss your progress and whether or not further sessions are needed.

Daytime and evening appointments are available and, while your first appointment will be arranged by our admin team in the office, subsequent appointments are arranged between you and your counsellor.

Is there a charge?

Relationships Scotland – Counselling Highland is an independent non profit making charity and although we receive grants from the Scottish Government and Highland Council we also rely on client contributions to provide our service. The initial consultation has a flat fee of £25. Client contributions for the counselling itself are dependent on income and will be discussed at the first consultation.

As a Charity, we have unfortunately recently found it necessary to introduce a fee of £30 for each session – this is per couple or individual if you are attending alone.

What if I can’t afford the £30 fee?

Please don’t let cost stop you from reaching out for support. We remain committed to providing free counselling for people who are not able to pay. If this applies to you, contact us in confidence and we can talk gently through the options together.

How do donations work?

Alongside the £30 session fee, some clients choose to add a voluntary donation of any amount. Donations are always optional and are used to help sustain our service and support others who may need free counselling.

Do I have to make a donation as well?

No. Donations are entirely your choice. There is no expectation or obligation to give anything beyond the standard session fee.

Why is this change being introduced?

This change helps us care for the future of the service, maintain the quality of support we offer, and continue our commitment to fair and equitable access, in line with third‑sector values.

What if I cancel a session?

If you cancel a session within 24 hours of your appointment we will ask for the full minimum fee of £30 for that session to be paid. Out with that time there is no cancellation charge.

Can I come on my own?

Yes, whether you are single or have a partner who does not want to attend you are still welcome to attend on your own.

Do I have to be married?

No, you do not have to be married or even be in a permanent or conventional relationship.

What about same sex couples?

The same service is offered regardless of sexual orientation. Relationship Scotland – Counselling Highland is committed to equal respect for all.

We are proud to have recently been awarded the Scottish LGBTI+ Rainbow Mark, underlining our commitment to all.

Is the service confidential?

Our counselling service is completely confidential. We will not disclose your name or any information about you to anyone outside Relationships Scotland – Counselling Highland unless someone’s personal safety is at risk. All our employees and counsellors are bound by a code of confidentiality.

Do you have a complaints procedure?

We do have a complaints procedure. If you wish to make a complaint please contact the manager in the first instance on 01463 712888.

Do you have child care facilities?

Unfortunately we cannot offer any child care. If you are struggling to attend an appointment due to child care please give us a call to re-arrange your appointment to a more suitable time.

Is there anyone you cannot see?

The only occasion we cannot offer our service is if you have a court case pending. Also, if a client arrives under the influence of drugs or alcohol they will be asked to leave as this could put our staff and counsellors at risk.
